Quarter of Welsh adults still binge drink

Results from the newly published Welsh Health Survey 2013 show no change in the proportion of adults who exceeded the recommended daily guidelines for alcohol consumption.

The report found that four in every ten adults (42%) admitted to drinking above the guidelines on at least one day in the past week, and a quarter (26%) who did so drank at least twice as much on their heaviest drinking day of the week.

Trend data show the latest figures levelling out a slight downward trend over a five-year period; between 2008 and 2013, the proportion of people drinking more than the daily guidelines of 4/3 units (men/women) fell by three per cent, and the proportion of those drinking more than twice that amount decreased by two per cent.
