FASawareUK East
Conference on FASD, ( Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder)
Cambridge Monday 23rd March 2009

FASawareUK East are delighted to announce that we are putting on a much needed conference on FASD, ( Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), in Cambridgeshire on Monday 23rd March 2009.

This conference is the first of its kind in East Anglia and very exciting. FASD is the most common cause of organic learning difficulty in the world and is grossly under reported or diagnosed in the UK. It is thought that as many as 70% of children in the care system have FASD and they 'fall through the net' due to the lack of awareness from their mother who drank alcohol during the pregnancy, and from professionals who have little or no knowledge of the disability that is invisible to the uninitiated. There are huge numbers of undiagnosed or wrongly diagnosed people who have FASD. Many who have FASD are wrongly diagnised with ADHD or Autism etc. and many are labelled 'difficult' in schools, nurseries, work and in prisons etc. Many who are not recognised by professionals actually have the disability and fail to achieve through no fault of their own. Have you ever wondered why there are increasing numbers of so called 'naughty' or 'difficult' children who we come across? Children that dont respond to the usual guidelines? Come to this conference and find out more and how you can help. Women drinking alcohol is on the increase, we are playing 'Russion Roulette' with children's lives if they drink alcohol when pregnant. Not only do we need to help those who have this disability, but we need to prevent the 100% life long disability in the first place. Midwives, Health Visitors, Social Workers, Police, Teachers, Gps etc. can you make it? FASawareUk aim to change this sitation in East Anglia and across the UK, and NOW. We need your help.

Due to the high demand for accurate knowledge of this disability, we are flying over an International speaker from Canada who has extensive knowledge on FASD and how this disability has been addressed across the world, years before it is starting to be accepted in the UK. Mary Cunningham specialises in Education of the FASD child and the Justice system.

We also have highly specialised and moving UK speakers who will guide you through what it is, its impact on the individual, family and agencies, highlighting the need for a multi agency community approach. We will also be officially launching FASawareUK Easts opening and publishing the shocking results of our recent survey of 36 families following an article written by A McCormick, on FASD, in Adoption UK, in December 08.

The conference is highly sponsored and thus is being offered on a first come, first served basis at a highly competitive rate of only £70 per delegate or 3 delegates for £180. Parents of a FASD child known to FASawareUk are only charged for £15 catering costs.
