Institute of Alcohol Studies - Guide to Resources

One of the main functions of the Institute is to provide up-to-date information about alcohol and alcohol-related harm, for a broad audience of journalists, policymakers, students and anyone else with an interest in these issues.  Please contact us if you would like hard copies of Factsheets or IAS Papers.

Factsheets
Our Factsheets cover a broad range of topics related to alcohol and are updated regularly. We are currently re-designing these factsheets and welcome any suggestions and comments regarding the format or content.

IAS Papers
The Institute regularly responds to consultations on suggested policy changes on alcohol (e.g. advertising regulations, licensing) This section is in three categories:

UK Alcohol Data Map
This ‘data map’ is a first attempt to map out all the publicly available data on alcohol in the UK. We first thought of creating a resource of this kind when we discovered just how much data exists covering a multitude of research questions – and how little of it has been used by alcohol researchers to date. We guessed that this is because trawling through obscure surveys in the hope of the perfect question is both time consuming and ultimately an unenjoyable task.

Thanks to a small grant from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the existing ESRC funded resources of the Question Bank (http://qb.soc.surrey.ac.uk/) and Data Archive (http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/), we have therefore developed a resource that quickly enables researchers to find the right dataset for their work.

If the resource proves popular, then the data map may well be developed into a more sophisticated and userfriendly form. Nevertheless, we hope that that even this first edition data map will help unlock some hitherto under-utilised data for your work.

Alcohol Alert
Our long-running quarterly magazine includes a variety of feature articles (sometimes written by people outside the Institute), research summaries, responses to current developments and book reviews.

UK Alcohol reports
This section comprises general alcohol reports from across the UK, including reports from the Department of Health, Public Health Observatories, Office for National Statistics, and National Centre for Social Research.
