We are an independent organisation with the broad aim of increasing knowledge of alcohol related issues in society. Our main work is based around helping to bridge the gap between the scientific evidence on alcohol and the wider public.

We want to make all the evidence accessible to anyone with an interest in alcohol – politicians, reporters, health professionals, students, youth workers and others – and to advocate for effective responses that will reduce the toll of alcohol related issues and problems in society.

A weblog maintained by Libby Ranzetta (Ranzetta Consulting), which contains updates on news and views from the UK alcohol field and beyond. It provides updates on the latest developments in alcohol harm reduction strategies across the board: licensing, health, treatment, housing, education, social care, community safety, crime and disorder, workforce development and regeneration.

Alcohol Concern is the national agency on alcohol misuse. They work to reduce the incidence and costs of alcohol-related harm and to increase the range and quality of services available to people with alcohol-related problems.


North West Public Health Observatory

The North West Public Observatory (NWPO) is part of The Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO).It provides a forum for disseminating good practice, sharing methodologies, coordinating action and providing a focus for links with national organisations.

The NWPHO fulfils a regional public health information and intelligence function supporting the work of public health professionals, local authorities and providers of healthcare and other services. The lead areas they address for the APHO are alcohol, substance use, violence and working with the health protection agency.

The Information Centre
