Alcohol Hospital Admissions continue to climb

Alcohol-related admissions to NHS hospitals in England are continuing to rise, according to figures provided by The NHS Information Centre in reply to a Parliamentary Question by Mr James Brokenshire MP.

It is estimated that around 6% of all NHS admissions are alcohol related, and that alcohol related admissions have been increasing by approximately 80,000 every year.

The new figures show that there were 945,223 people admitted to hospital with an alcohol-related illness between 2008-09,

compared to 644,185 in 2004/05, an increase of 38% (using rates of admission statistics per 100,000 population). The highest rates of admissions occurred throughout the period in the North East and the North West Strategic Health Authorities.
