IAS webinar: Minimum Unit Pricing: Lessons for England

24th March 2025

Thursday, 29 May, 12:00-13:30 BST

Join our webinar to learn everything you need to know about Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) of alcohol. Leading experts will explore the theory behind the policy, its impact in Scotland and Wales, and crucially, what England can learn from their experiences.

Please register on Eventbrite here.

England remains the only UK nation yet to introduce, or plan to introduce, MUP. With increasing pressure on the new government to consider the policy, this webinar will examine lessons from Scotland and Wales, including political and media debates, alcohol industry obstruction, health outcomes, and economic effects. We will also address unintended consequences such as the policy’s erosion due to inflation and retailer profit-making.

The webinar will cover:

  • What MUP is and how it works
  • Key lessons from Scotland and Wales, including advocacy efforts
  • Its impact on dependent drinkers and people in deprived areas
  • How England could improve upon the devolved nations’ policies
  • Findings from a new Social Market Foundation report on recouping windfall retailer profits

Agenda

  • 12:00-12:10: Introduction from Dr Katherine Severi, IAS
  • 12:10-12:20: Dr Abi Stevely, Sheffield Addictions Research Group
  • 12:20-12:30: Prof John Holmes, Sheffield Addictions Research Group
  • 12:30-12:40: Alison Douglas, Alcohol Focus Scotland
  • 12:40-12:50: Andrew Misell, Alcohol Change UK
  • 12:50-13:00: Jake Shepherd, Social Market Foundation
  • 13:00-13:30: Q&A session facilitated by Dr Katherine Severi

This event is for public health professionals, researchers, healthcare workers, civil servants, NGOs, health agencies etc. If you or your organisation receives funding from the alcohol industry (alcohol producers, retailers, trade associations, Social Aspect Public Relations Organisations (SAPROs), & Business-Interest NGOs) please do not attend.
